Contactors are simply an electromagnetic switch that let the main power in to the air conditioning unit. They are controlled by an electromagnetic coil that engages the contacts. When replacing a contactor you should look for the following things: Determine how many spring-loaded contacts it has (most units have 1 or 2). Find the coil voltage. (Most AC contactors run on a 24 volt coil, but there are some that run on 120 or 240 volts.) Find the Full Load Amps (FLA). This is the amperage rating that the contactor can handle. This is usually located in a chart on the contactor itself.
